Germany: Off the Beaten Path in Europe

It seems that always the same countries in Europe receive all the love (France, Italy, UK etc.) while others are much more unassuming, waiting quietly to be discovered.

One of these more reserved countries from my viewpoint is Germany, though it has gained in popularity especially in the river cruising industry.

Some of you know that I grew up in Germany and lived there for 14 years, the 2nd longest I’ve lived in any country. 🙂

I honestly never paid much attention to this country as a travel destination until I moved away and went back to visit family and friends on frequent trips. One time we even picked up a 3 axle mega RV in Dusseldorf and traveled all over Germany, something I never imagined ever doing.

Germany - Rothenburg o.d. Tauber

That’s when I discovered how beautiful Germany really is. It is dotted with picturesque islands with miles of sandy beaches in the North (not the kind with palm trees and beach bars you would find in Thailand but nevertheless stunning) and of course there are the fairy tale kind of villages all over Germany with some of my favorites in the Southern state of Bavaria.

It’s a big country and you might find it challenging to figure out where to start.

For any first time visitor to Germany, I would recommend to begin in the South, traveling to places like Neuschwanstein, Berchtesgaden, Munich and work your way up, preferably along the “Romantische Strasse”, especially if you are willing to rent a car and do a self drive.

If you have some extra time, you can also easily visit some of the cities in the neighboring countries Austria and Switzerland. Cities like Salzburg, Vienna and of course Zurich would be on top of my list.

If you prefer to have all transportation taken care of, it is easy to travel between cities by high speed or regular train and have exciting day tours arranged to all the places you would like to see.
